What You Need To Know

The S-Line will keep running during construction starting May 2026, but there will be brief service interruptions for some upgrades.

UTA and Salt Lake City are working together to keep disruptions as minimal as possible. If there are major street or access closures, we will post them ahead of time on this webpage, on social media, or in Rider Insider newsletters (subscribe here).

Early construction will include relocating overhead power lines and removing the vacant buildings located between Simpson Avenue, Sugarmont Drive, and Highland Drive.

UTA is committed to working with the Sugar House community throughout this project. The team will stay in touch with local businesses, property owners, and residents before each phase of construction to ensure project awareness and address any concerns, working closely with Salt Lake City. The main goal is to keep Sugar House moving and informed as this important transit link is built.

Riders: Service alerts will be shared (sign up here), and bus bridge service will be available if needed.

Drivers: Drivers will see temporary lane closures, sidewalk detours, and changes to parking near the construction zone while work is underway. There will be temporary impacts to traffic, including lane closures on Simpson Avenue and 1100 East for this work.

What To Expect

  • Construction is set to begin in May 2026 and continue into mid-2027, with the new streetcar service expected to open by fall 2027.
  • Nearby residents and businesses may experience noise, lighting, dust, and vibration. Most work will be done during the day, but minimal utility work may need to be done at night.

Why This Is Happening

This extension is a key investment in sustainable transportation for the Sugar House business district, bringing the streetcar closer to shops, restaurants, new housing, and the University of Utah Sugar House Health Center.
