For the Utah Transit Authority, sustainability is a comprehensive approach to delivering mobility that protects the environment, strengthens communities, and supports long-term economic vitality. As a vital connector along the Wasatch Front, UTA links people to opportunities, services, and one another while helping shape a more sustainable future for Utah.
As the region continues to grow, UTA recognizes the critical role transit plays in reducing traffic, improving air quality, and expanding access to safe, reliable transportation. UTA’s sustainability efforts are guided by 3 interconnected pillars: fostering healthy environments, supporting thriving communities, and advancing shared prosperity. Together, these pillars reflect the broad impact public transit has across the Wasatch Front and serve as the foundation for UTA’s decision-making and long-term planning.
3 Pillars of Sustainability
Environmental Stewardship: By reducing single-occupancy vehicle trips, UTA helps improve air quality and lower emissions along the Wasatch Front. Through cleaner fleets, renewable energy, and
efficient infrastructure, we are working to create a healthier future for our region and the generations that follow.
Commitment to Community: UTA is committed to building a transit system that connects everyone to opportunity. By expanding access to reliable transit, biking, and walking options, we help people reach the places that matter most while supporting healthier, more connected communities.
Shared Prosperity: Strong transit systems support strong communities. By improving mobility and encouraging thoughtful growth, UTA connects people to jobs, attracts investment, and builds
a stronger regional economy for everyone.
Sustainability at UTA: Our Past, Present & Future
Sustainability has long been part of UTA’s mission and operations. Since its inception, the agency has taken meaningful steps to improve service, reduce environmental impacts, and better serve the community. Explore the timeline below to see how UTA has made sustainability a priority throughout its history.

Sustainability Plan
Building on this foundation, UTA has developed its first agency-wide Sustainability Plan to guide the organization as it prepares to meet Utah’s growing transportation needs. The plan outlines strategies focused on five key areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, conserving water, minimizing waste, and strengthening organizational resilience. Together, these priorities will shape future Investments, guide operational decisions, and embed sustainability throughout the organization.
